Dell Inspiron 1501 Screen goes black with a white box?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. The screen goes black with a white box about 1 inch square. The laptop still has power but is totally locked up. I am forced to hold the power button down to turn it off. This happens completely randomly. Doesn't matter what I am doing but it happens every time I use it. Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it? Dell says I need to reload the software that came with the computer. Anyone have any better ideas? Thanks

Based on this I believe it is related to the power management features. I will explore this to see what happens.
